Dr. Shockman served as a guest speaker who delivered a fascinating talk about sustainability and his involvement with the Global Hunger Foundation. Dr. Schockman is the president and founder of this foundation, which is dedicated to helping women facing poverty in the developing world by funding sustainable development and organic farming projects. His inspiration was sparked early in life when he served in the Peace Corps in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and taught agricultural and sustainable development as a means of helping community members in their struggle against hunger.
Kreigh Hampel

BRC (Burbank Recycling Center)
Recycling Coordinator
Mr. Hampel led the class through an eye-opening tour of the Burbank Recycling Center and explained just how much our daily habits affect Woodbury University’s surrounding community alone. Hampel demonstrated the ins-and-outs of the site and enlightened the class on issues such as the everyday plastic water bottle (let’s just say we should all be purchasing reusable glass bottles!).
Stephen Groner

President of S. Groner Associates (SGA)
Mr. Groner spoke to the MRKT 330 students about sustainability, marketing, and identity in his exploratory speech regarding his involvement with building comprehensive marketing and public education campaigns that deliver environmental justice in a business setting and how marketing speaks to identities. Mr. Groner’s firm has worked with clients such as the EPA, Chevron, the Bay Foundation, and the Contra Costa Clean Water Program.

Penny Collins, published author and former chair of the Fashion Design department at Woodbury University, discussed the truth about the clothes we buy and discard in relation to those in need and the environment. Clad with her amazing recycled jean jacket (looks like it’s right out of Almost Famous), Ms. Collins explained just how great an impact clothing materials have on the environment - for example, how the clothes we discard just go straight to the nearest landfill. She inspired the class to make much more informed decisions when it comes to “fast fashion” and clothing consumption.
